FAQ

01

When to Plant Delphinium Seeds

Plant delphinium seeds in fall or early spring.

02

Where to Plant Delphinium Seeds

Delphinium plants like full sun to part shade and they will grow quickly. They thrive in average soil and cool weather.

03

How to Plant Delphinium Seeds

Although not required, delphinium seeds can benefit from a special treatment called cold-wet stratification 1 to 2 weeks before planting.

Delphiniums are difficult to transplant, so it is best to sow the seeds directly into the garden in case there is any danger of frost. Lightly cover the delphinium seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. Space the seeds 4 inches apart, and after germination, space the seedlings to 10-12 inches apart. Keep the soil moist to encourage rapid growth of delphiniums.

04

How to Care for Delphiniums

During dry periods, water once or twice a week. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer once a month until after flowering. Stakes may be necessary to keep them from buckling under the weight of the flowers. Delphiniums are very susceptible to frost, fungal diseases (especially sclerotinia) and mold. Insects shouldn't be a problem, but if there are, use an all-purpose repellent.  Delphinium can be toxic to some animals, especially cattle!

05

Delphiniums multiply quickly . The plant will at least double in size next year. If too large, the plants will have to be divided again the following year.

06

To keep delphiniums in bloom, you'll need to cut off the main stem once the petals start falling off . Then, fertilize the soil and water the remaining side shoots. Trimming your delphiniums can help them bloom all summer long, and it can also bring some lovely cut flowers into your home.

07

  1. Use supports: Glue some sturdy poles, stakes, or metal frames around the plants. Insert them into the soil and anchor them to main stems or important branches for extra support.

  2. Embrace Plant Grid: Set up or install a plant grid around your plants to let the stems interweave with the grid, adding stability and preventing them from tipping over.

  3. Pruning and Pruning: Prune regularly to promote branching and side shoots, enhancing overall structure and stability.

  4. Improve soil: Make sure the soil is rich in organic matter, maintains proper moisture, and is well-drained, which promotes healthy growth and root development.

  5. Wind protection: In windy areas, consider using wind screens or fencing to reduce the impact of high winds on plants and protect them.
